The voyage of discovery begins with the exploration of Penang Hill by British explorer Captain Sir Francis Light circa 1700, who also founded George Town. It led to the growing popularity of the hill among the colonial settlers and officials of the British East India Company, with the erection of heritage bungalows and structures as their favourite hideaways.

Undoubtedly, the development of the 2-kilometre funicular railway system circa 1900 was the most transforming event in the history of Penang Hill. With easy accessibility, advanced funicular railway system, upgraded infrastructures circa 2000, the hill is now more than a permanent address, but also a “residence” for the hill’s natural inhabitants and a welcoming hiking spot for hiking enthusiasts.
